We spent the first few nights in Playa Del Carmen, about 45 minutes south of Cancun.  At night 5th Avenue is closed to automobile traffic and is mobbed by the tourists.

By the time I took this picture (around 11 p.m.), the crowds had thinned out considerably.  We were also there during the slow season--I'm not sure I want to see how crowded it is in the busy season!
